Jurídicamente Argentina se constituyó como una federación de provincias y mantiene por mandato constitucional los nombres históricos de Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata y Confederación Argentina, además de República Argentina (el único usual).<br /> <br /> Las provincias argentinas se autogobiernan, redactan sus propias constituciones y tienen poderes ejecutivo, legislativo y judicial propios, incluyendo sus propias fuerzas de seguridad. Catorce de ellas son históricamente anteriores a la organización constitucional establecida en 1853/1860. Todas son jurídicamente preexistentes a la Nación y conservan de manera exclusiva todos los poderes no delegados expresamente a la Nación en la Constitución Nacional.<br /> <br /> La Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) no es una provincia ni pertenece a alguna de ellas. Perteneció hasta 1880​ a la provincia de Buenos Aires, año en que fue federalizada (nacionalizada) para servir de capital federal. <br /> <br /> Desde la reforma constitucional de 1994, posee un régimen de «gobierno autónomo» con facultades propias legislativas y jurisdiccionales, de rango constitucional.
